One of the biggest concerns students have when taking a gap year, is how will I afford it? If you are lacking funds to do what you want to do during your gap year. Then you should consider working part-time before your adventure begins. Working can be as beneficial as taking a gap year. You gain real world experience, responsibility, and a sense of freedom. Here are 5 interesting and fun ways to make money during your gap year, but I assure you, there are a lot more than just 5 ways to make money. Let your inner entrepreneur shine and listen to your gut.

1. Freelance

Freelance work allows you to be mobile and be able to work anywhere with a internet connection. If you are skilled in graphic design, web development, writing, and marketing. I recommend checking Fiverr or Upwork for a market of freelance work. Most freelance work also allows you to work at home, create your own hours, making it incredibly flexible.

2. Part-Time

If you need money before starting your adventures then you should consider  applying for part-time jobs. There are always openings at restaurants and retail stores. It might not be the most rewarding work but the end goal will be worth it. Earning your own money to travel is real independence that you can’t buy.

3. Blogging

Blogging is a great way to make money, however you have to keep in mind that at first you will earn absolutely nothing. It takes months, if not years to build up a substantial audience to make money from affiliate links or ads. Although it takes a long time and lots of hard work to make money from blogging, it is really rewarding and a beneficial addition to your portfolio/resume.

4. Start Your Own Business

Are you entrepreneurial? Did you always know that you wanted to start your own business and be your own boss? Were you the kid on the block who ran the lemonade stand or flipped stuff on eBay? If you are any one of those things I just said, then you should start your own business during your gap year! The best time to start a business would be now, especially when you have a year to yourself! You finally have the time now to research niche markets, create business plans, design your own website, and so on…

5. Teach English Abroad

Teaching english abroad is a great way to earn money, experience a different culture, and travel at the same time! Teaching english during your gap year is also a great opportunity to improve your social skills with others. Making you incredibly valuable in the job market.
